Pagers and Receivers
To most of those we serve, “pager” means either one of
two things.
Institutional and hospitality users normally think of
pagers as notification devices to alert guests, parents or patrons that there
order is ready or they are needed in the nursery.
The more correct name for such devices would more
appropriately be that of a Notifier.
We’ll come back to this again shortly, but for
now, we will address the application of pagers for fire and rescue alerting
devices.
There are three basic ways to notify people.
If they are on foot or in a vehicle you would
normally use a wide area personal alerting device, often referred to as a
FirePager. If they are
seated, or on foot within a building or campus, the device of choice would be a
Notifier. Those who are in a building or on a campus that do NOT have any type
of personal notification device would best be alerted by a Public Address (PA)
system.
The largest user group served by Falcon Direct is
volunteer fire and rescue users requiring a device that provides personal
alerting plus the ability to monitor 2-way radio calls while they are enroute or
at the scene.
The device most commonly used by this group is
called a monitor
pager.
The three most popular devices currently used as monitor
pagers are the Motorola Minitor V, the ICOM F50V, and the US Alert WatchDog.
All have selective alerting with audible and/or
vibrate alert plus monitor capability.
Additional channels are available as an option as
is the ability to record and playback incoming messages - a very nice feature.
The F50V is ideally suited for fire personnel
since it is water submersion capable without damage (Up to 30 minutes at depths
of up to 3 feet), and it can TALK BACK!
Additional information on all three products is
available at

Fixed alerting pagers, sometimes known as
station house monitors are
commonly used in fire stations, often connected to PA systems in larger
buildings.
Wireless PA systems are often used in a building or
campus environment.
An interesting story of the use of such devices by
a small college is available at
www.info4u.us/BatesStory.pdf.
