Migration Compatible Radios A migration compatible radio, alternately known as a flex mode radio is capable of operating at current Phase One APCO-25 technical standards as they relate to conventional (non-trunking) 12.5 kHz compatibility and backwards compatible to 25 kHz, both in the analog mode. These radios are capable of being upgraded to operate on both analog and digital modes with a channel spacing of 12.5 or 25 kHz. By the way, if some of the terms we are using are somewhat foreign to you, don't feel alone. Our entire industry is learning as we go. For the technically inclined, or those who simply want more information on this whole APCO-25 subject, we invite you to visit a very informative web site at http://www.apcointl.org/frequency/project25/information.html. For more information on trunking, you may want to visit www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=3. Suffice it to say for now that migration compatible radios can be a good investment if you are looking at a 20 year equipment life cycle (which is not at all uncommon in public safety). The BK Radio division of Relm Wireless is a long time supplier of high quality, ultra reliable radios used by the U.S. Forest Service, the Department of the Interior and others who demand radios designed for rugged use. The GPH series handheld and the GMH series mobiles are designed specifically for migration planning. The prices are a little higher than conventional Phase One radios, but in the long run, the price is easily justified. The model generally specified for use in working with the U.S. Forest Service is specified below.
