About our selections…..

The radios selected by Falcon Direct for on-site use fall into three categories – VHF with no FCC license required, UHF with license required, and 900 MHz with no license required.  There are some radios that are less expensive (a few of them can be found at www.falcondirect.com/VL50) any many that are more expensive.

Our objective is to assist you in selecting the one just right for your individual needs.  Since the cost of an FCC license can cost $500 or more, we normally do not recommend UHF for on-site use.  Contrary to popular opinion, the FRS and GMRS radios that are available at supply houses and consumer stores can NOT be used for commercial activities.  Those who ignore this can be subject to fines of up to $10,000 and even imprisonment.

The Midland 70-440BP is an excellent choice for UHF users who want to add additional radios.  All radios with the exception of the Motorola DTR can be ordered on your choice of VHF or UHF with the normal new system choice being VHF.

You will note a significant price difference in the models offered.  In general, you pay for reliability (as attested by testing standards), battery and charger type, size, brand name, and features.  All radios selected are of good quality with state of the art batteries and chargers.  All but two (Relm and TEKK) have passed Military testing standards.

Both Motorola models meet ISO-9001 quality assurance procedures in addition to IP54 dust and moisture resistance plus accelerated life testing.

You will note that power ranges from a half watt up to 5 watts.  As a general rule, a 2 watt VHF or UHF radio will meet the needs of most users.  In the 900 MHz band, the optimum power is 1 watt.

Incredibly, the Motorola DTR 900 MHz radio typically communicates up to 20% further than either VHF or UHF within a building or campus environment.  The reason for this is digital versus analog technology.  The DTR is the only model offered with digital spread spectrum technology developed by the US Military for secure communications by field personnel.

Not only does digital technology talk farther, it provides a high level of security.  From a practical viewpoint, the biggest advantage is that of allowing multiple users to engage in private communications simultaneously (kind of like Nextel without monthly airtime charges!)

With the DTR, you can have private one-to-one communications, multiple group communications, or everybody at once.  You can’t do that with any analog system.  If you already have a UHF or VHF system, you may want to select one of our analog models, otherwise, we recommend digital!

A word about service!

We understand the need for good service.  That is why we offer our Direct Exchange program.  For an annual fee equal to 10% of the original equipment cost (just $15 annually for the Midland radio), we will deliver a replacement radio within 24 hours if service is required.  Other than abuse and battery replacement cost, your maintenance expense and downtime is ZERO!
