Remote switching by radio control is not a new concept. Radio remote control of golf course sprinklers provides course maintenance personnel the ability to turn pumps on or off as a supplement to the regular timers. Historically, the systems providers by golf course irrigation manufacturers utilized a custom designed 2-way radio system designed by Motorola which used relatively inexpensive control boards based on paging technology. In order to activate these sprinkler heads from a handheld portable radio, it was necessary to install a computer with custom software, a terminal that would convert analog DTMF signals to digital (POCSAG) paging signals and a special repeater radio capable on operating in the direct FM and PM (phase modulated modes). These systems were expensive to purchase and expensive to maintain. Most of these systems were designed over a decade ago. The computers are mostly out of date. The terminals used to provide the analog to digital conversions are not longer manufactured or supported and the cost for updating the radios to narrow band being quoted is nearing extortion levels. Further the customers must look at upgrading the PC's the software, and maybe even the control boards. TeleSwitch could be a solution for golf course users. A word about the FCC licensing All 2-way radios used for business and governmental use must be licensed excluding Family Radio Service (FRS) radios - period, no exceptions, ever, for anybody except one. The MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) is available for anyone to use - business, personal or public safety. Five frequencies are available in the VHF 150 - 154 MHz band for fixed station, mobile, handheld or paging use. General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) frequencies are NOT approved for commercial or governmental use. The so called color dot frequencies DO require an FCC license for use. All licensed base stations (Stationary Radio Units) must transmit their assigned station call letters in voice or Morse code at least once every hour. Substantial fines can result from improper operation. Falcon Direct can assist you in obtaining an FCC license.
