The right radio for YOU!

Before sharing why we make certain suggestions relative to the type of equipment best suited for your individual needs, we should point out that we do not offer Amateur, CB or FRS radios, nor do we offer Nextel.  There are several reasons for this.  Amateur radios are primarily sold by specialty retailers who are focused on serving the needs of amateur radio operators.  It is not that we don't have an understanding of these requirements (three of us are ham radio operators).  It is more a matter of serving a hobby market rather than a professional market.  There are others who have made a commitment to serving the amateur radio users and we applaud their efforts.  Relative to CB and FRS radios, we simply are not set up to adequately market these products.  Both are consumer products with the major sales being made by catalog merchandisers, discount stores, the Internet, scanner/CB dealers and truck stops.  In regard to Nextel, we sold the product for a number of years.  As our focus intensified in serving the needs of public safety and corporate users, we determined that the Sprint 3G network was best suited for the needs of our customers.

Relative to GMRS, MURS, and Private Radio systems, we could offer virtually any brand and any price point desired.  We are authorized direct resellers for MA-COM, Motorola, Relm, Ritron,  and TEKK.  We have access through distributors for reselling Cobra, ICOM, Kenwood, Midland, Tait and others.  After evaluating them all for the better part of a half century, we have concluded that the best interests of those we serve is best served by selling a single brand - Motorola!  This is not to say that there are not other good radios or that Motorola is the least expensive in terms of initial cost.  Rarely is Motorola initially the lease expensive.  However, on the basis of VALUE, we favor Motorola, but we recognize that is some cases, an alternate may be better suited to the needs of a particular user.  That is why we also offer recommend selected products by Relm and Ritron.  The question is, just exactly how do you determine true value?

Motorola considers value to be one of the elements of what they call M7.  We will define value in a moment.  For now, we ask you only to consider that Motorola considers Value to be THE MOST IMPORTANT consideration in defining the suitability of a product to meet your needs. The considerations in order of importance are(1) Value, (2) Reliability, (3) Ease of Use, (4) Audio Quality, (5) Size and Weight, (6) Battery Life, and (7) Range.  For what it's worth, the order of consideration is almost the exact reverse of what most manufacturers advertise.  The first question generally asked (or answered) is price.  In reality, price is a part of value.  Low price does not necessarily represent value.  The second question is how far will it talk, or how many watts does it have?  Note that range comes in dead last in terms of the total long term satisfaction requirements defined by the Motorola M7 program.  Now, let's define value!

You can only have value if the product is properly suited for your requirements and it has all the elements of M7.  Once those requirements are met, we look at the components that make value.  They are (1) Pre-sale service, (2) Initial cost, (3) Cost of operation, (4) Minimal downtime, (5) Flexible acquisition plans, (6) Post sale service, and (7) Trade-in allowance at replacement time.  The fact is that you can purchase any radio you want from a variety of sources including local dealers, specialty retailers, mass merchandisers, mail order, directly from the manufacturer (in some cases), from distributors who sell to anyone possessing a credit card, and of course, the Internet.  Not all Motorola resellers are created equal. We can't speak for anyone other than ourselves.  What we can say, and do, is that we provide a level of Pre-Sale Service unmatched by anyone, anywhere - period!  We consider assisting those we work with as the foundation for developing a long term relationship.  The material you are now reading is an example of this commitment.

Initial Cost is obviously influenced by the measure of support given to the needs of the consumer.  Those who do not provide pre-sale service should be able to sell at a lower cost than one who does.  In reality, we have not found this to be true.  Our prices are often lower than those who sell on the basis of price alone.  Cost of Operation is what it costs to keep your equipment operating.  Even though you may have a manufacturer's warranty, that does not alter the fact that to take advantage of that warranty, you have to return the defective product to the manufacturer.  You pay for the cost of shipping, and you lose the use of the equipment while it is away.  We have a better way - we call it Next Day Exchange or N.D.E.  When you sign up for N.D.E.,  we take care of you!  If you have a problem, just give us a call and we send you a replacement with call tags to pick up your defective unit.  You get a replacement radio the very next day and you pay NOTHING!  Is this worth something?  You bet it is!  Isn't it worth paying a little more to have the peace of mind in knowing that your cost of maintenance and downtime  is ZERO?  We think it is and that is why we offer optional N.D.E. service on all of our products!

If you need help in financing, we can offer some of the most creative alternates available anywhere.  If you need help after making your purchase, we are there for you, and when it comes time to trade your equipment for a newer model, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that no other communications product holds it's value like the selected models we have chosen as representing the best value!  If you are looking for  the lowest possible initial price, there will always be someone else who may be able to offer another brand or model at lower cost, or in some cases even the same brand and model.  Unfortunately, that may NOT be the best value!  We know that you know the difference!

PERSONAL 2-WAY RADIOS

The Motorola CP100 15 channel GMRS Radio

GMRS RADIOS

The Motorola CP100 is our choice for a GMRS Radio.  The CP100 has 56 internal preprogrammed UHF channels.  A choice of up to 15 of these channels can be programmed into a fixed list (switch selectable).  If desired you can have a mix of GMRS, FRS, or a choice of Color Dot* commercial frequencies (See below).  When operating on the color dot frequencies, this radio can be operated for business use IF you have applied for the proper FCC license.  Remember, you cannot conduct business on either GMRS or FRS channels.  The CP100 is an ideal choice for both personal and business use at reasonable cost.  Complete technical specifications are available at http://www.motorola.com/cgiss/docs/CP100_Accessories.pdf. This file requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing.  If you don't have a copy of the Reader, you can download a free copy at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. For ease of viewing, we suggest that you change the viewing size to 150%.  With a power output of 2 watts, standard features include standard squelch, coded squelch, and digital squelch plus selectable call tones, internal Call tones and VOX.  The CP100 is MIL SPEC 810 approved (C, D, E, and F) plus IP54 Weatherproofing. The CP100 is supplied with a 1500 mAh memory free Nickel Metal-Hydride battery, 10 hour plug in charger, swivel belt holster, user guide, a one year factory warranty. Your on-line price is only  $203.

Color dot is the common term for a group of low-power  channels primarily used by handheld transceivers. This equipment (which needs to be FCC licensed in any of several radio services) is widely sold at general merchandise stores, as well as electronics, sporting goods, outdoors, auto supply dealers. The equipment is popular with the public for all manner of business and recreational communications. So as not to overload the consumer with confusing tech terminology, the operating channel may be specified in terms of a dot of color (i.e., a red dot on the radio means it operates on 151.625 MHz). Hence the term color dot, which has become generic for a large group of channels, although only certain selected ones are actually referred to by a specific color.  We thought it would be of interest to provide a listing of these VHF and UHF channels.

VHF High Band: 151.505, 151.625 (Red Dot), 151.70, 151.76, 151.82, 151.88, 151.94, 151.955 (Purple Dot), 154.54, 154.57 (Blue Dot), 154.60 (Green Dot), 158.40. MHz.

UHF Band: 464.50 (Brown Dot), 464.55 (Yellow Dot), 467.7625 (J Dot), 467.8125 (K Dot), 467.85 (Silver Star), 467.875 (Gold Star), 467.90 (Red Star), 467.925 (Blue Star), 469.50, 469.55 MHz.

The Motorola CP100 15 channel MURS radio

MURS RADIOS

The Motorola CP100 is also our choice for a MURS Radio.  As you will note, the MURS model is identical in appearance to the GMRS model.  The main difference is the operating frequency band.  The GMRS model operates in the 460-470 MHz band on preprogrammed (non-changeable) frequencies.  The MURS model operates in the VHF 151-154 MHz band on your choice of 27 preprogrammed frequencies with a maximum of 15 selectable.  Unlike GMRS, no license is required for MURS and also unlike GMRS, both personal and business use is allowed on MURS channels. The VHF CP100 also includes preprogrammed VHF color dot* business use channels (See above). Complete technical specifications are available at http://www.motorola.com/cgiss/docs/CP100_Accessories.pdf. This file requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing. Your on-line price is only $185.

15 channel versions (See picture above) of the CP100 are available for both the GMRS and MURS models at slight additional cost as well as a full line of accessories available for purchase on-line.

The Relm RPV516

is our most affordable full-featured commercial grade radio.  So what do we mean by commercial grade?  First, it operates on channels exclusively for business in either the VHF (148-174 MHz) or UHF (450-470 MHz) bands.  Although these radios can be programmed for use on FRS or GMRS channels, with few exceptions, they are designed specifically for commercial and public safety use.  Commercial grade radios have passed rugged military testing and obtained an approval known as MIL SPEC 810 which simply says the radio is built to last.  This is validated by a 2-year factory warranty that can be supplemented by our own N.D.E. (Next Day Exchange) program that provides instant replacement and low cost maintenance when required.

The Nickel Metal-Hydride battery used in the RPV516 (VHF) and RPU416 (UHF) does not develop a memory resulting in reduced operating life (a common problem with Nickel Cadmium batteries).  Further, the RP Series radio is supplied with a fast rate one-hour rapid desk charger with automatic conditioning for the longest possible life.

With 16-channel capability, dual mode (12.5 and 25 KHz channel spacing) plus built in selective signaling; the RP series radio incorporates features normally found in only the most expensive radios.  With built in 2-tone paging capability, this is an ideal choice for all types of commercial applications.

The Relm RPV599 Plus

Somebody finally got it right!  That somebody is Relm, the company who produced the first transistor radio, developed the scanner, and made 2-way communications affordable as far back as 1965!

Need power?  How about 5 watts with up to 99 channel priority scan capability, dual mode, with both CTCSS and DCS tone squelch?  Need features?  How about DTMF encode and decode and ANI capability plus built in 2-tone paging and page encode capability?  Need reliability?  How about a MIL-SPEC 810 rating backed by a two-year full coverage factory warranty?

Need performance?  How about a 1500 mAh memory free Nickel Metal-Hydride battery with desktop rapid conditioning charger to give you maximum operating life and low cost of operation?

Need convenience?  How about the ability to program frequencies DIRECTLY FROM THE KEYPAD with no PC or external devices required?  How about OVER THE AIR CLONING that allows you to instantly transfer programming data from one radio to another?

Need flexibility and compatibility with existing systems?  Not a problem!  The RPV599 is a dual mode radio with both standard and narrow band capability.  Need low cost of operation?  How about a flat rate repair plan that costs you just $37.50 per repair with a next day exchange replacement during the warranty term? Call for details.  Need assurance?  Try the new RPV599 Plus  for up to 10 days at our expense.  You'll see why we say that nothing else is even close!

The Ritron SST-D

Although not the least expensive, nor even offering the most features, the Ritron is an outstanding choice for anyone desiring a good reliable radio that is easy to operate and with outstanding battery life!  There are two other things that make the Ritron SST-D Series a very special radio.  Notably, it is the ONLY radio made in the USA - Carmel, Indiana to be exact, and they have been doing it for 25 years!  Second, we conclude by reviewing the service costs on all models that using the flat rate repair program offered by Ritron, that it has the lowest operating cost of them all!  Since the true cost of any product is a total of the initial price, plus maintenance, plus replacement of expendables (i.e. batteries), the Ritron comes in as the best value of them all.  If the features and the functionality of the SST-D meet your requirements, we recommend it without reservation!

Another unique capability of the SST Series is an optional model that operates in both conventional and LTR trunking modes.  If you want a radio capable of meeting your current and future requirements, the SST has to be one of your best choices!  All of the radios we offer meet the FCC 12.5 kHz narrow band channel spacing requirements currently being implemented.  Only a few offer LTR trunking.  Most people associate the benefits of trunking only with 800 MHz.  The fact is that trunking technology can be implemented on standard VHF or UHF channels and many departments are considering the use of the defacto national standard - LTR!  If you would like more information on trunking, how it works, and why it should be an important part of your planning, please give us a call.

The Motorola CP200

is the radio you have been waiting for! The new Motorola CP200 is just a little over 5 inches high and weighs just over 13 ounces, with the optional Lithium-Ion battery, yet it provides 5 watts of power (4 watts in UHF), 16 channel priority scan capability and a desk charger.  With the optional rapid charger, you can operate your CP200 for up to 16 hours, then charge your battery in 90 minutes or less. The CP200 is covered by a two-year factory warranty.  Built in 2-tone paging is standard as well as MDC-1200 I.D.  If you have been waiting for the best radio at the best price, your wait is over!  Additional information is available in the MOTOROLA section on our main site, www.falcondirect.com.  Both VHF and UHF models are available!
